Carib Ocho Rios - Lobster & Crabs

An Exquisite Lobster Lunch

Everyone knows that Jamaica is famous for Jerk Chicken, Jerk Pork, Jerk Fish and many other unique tastes of Jamaica.

But lobster, when in season, is a fantastic and sweet delicacy.

Lobster can easily be purchased in the Supermarkets, or even better, live and fresh from Sam the Fisherman who can be found on the beach in early mornings.

I cannot count the number of mornings I found Sam knocking on my door with a few lobsters dangling from their antennae in his hands. This is always a pleasant experience to know that today's lunch would consist of fresh lobster. If you also want conch or other fresh fish, either Sam or his brother Jessie can accommodate your needs. You only need to stop by the beach, and place your 'order' with Sam. Note that the weather plays a large part in what they are able to catch that day, so be prepared for a 'no-show' if the weather is bad.

The first picture shows ten (10) lobsters, about 1-1/4 pounds each, just after delivery and waiting for the master cook (me) in Apt. 306's kitchen sink.

And of course, once boiled to perfection, what could be better than sitting on the veranda having a fantastic lobster lunch with a cold Jamaican Red Stripe Beer?

Jamaican "Stone Crabs"
At Their BEST!

If you like crabs, you will LOVE Jamaican Stone Crabs!

Sam the Fisherman can always be counted on to bring the freshest of sea catches to your door, but sometimes he just does such a good job you will find yourself just smiling about it.

That was exactly the case a short while ago when I found Sam at my front door one early morning. I previously mentioned to him that if he found any crabs, I would be interested. Well, he obviously found some!

The 1st picture is a good indication of their size as I prepare to lower one of these babies into the large pot at the bottom right of the picture. I'm 6'1", and this big guy stretched out to more than half my height! And the claws were as big as my hands!

There were 3 Stone Crabs which Sam brought to me that morning, and I'm sure you can see from the above picture that these crabs are a little too big to be cooked together, even in the huge pot which normally is used for 6 to 8 lobsters at a time.

The next picture is the 3 crabs from that day (perfectly cooked, I might add )........ a total of 14 pounds in only 3 crabs. Note that this apartment has a kitchen sized double sink, and they don't even fit!

You may be asking, "Let me see a close up of one of these huge delights!". Well, even if you are not asking, the next picture is the largest of the bunch ..... a fella that weighed in at about 6 pounds all by himself!

Finally, the man that made it all happen...... Sam the Fisherman! Our hats are OFF to you, Sam.......
